What Is The Automated Follicular Unit Extraction Hair Transplant System?

Before Automated Follicular Unit Extraction Systems, traditional hair transplantation required removing a large “donor site” from the back of the patient’s scalp or spending hours harvesting individual hair follicles manually. The new system uses the most advanced instruments available to successfully extract hair follicles without the drawbacks of traditional hair restoration procedures. Follicular Unit Extractions eliminates the need for the surgical removal of a strip of skin from the back of the head and instead extracts individual hair follicles, one by one, to reduce recovery time and the risk of complications with a very impressive success rate. By automating the follicle extraction process, the system also decreases procedure time and costs.

Advantages Of The Automated Follicular Unit Extraction Hair Transplant System

Benefits of this system compared to traditional hair transplants

  • Local anesthesia only
  • No scalpel, no stitches
  • Fewer complications
  • No linear scarring
  • Less activity restrictions and recovery time after the procedure
  • Faster treatment time

How Automated Follicular Unit Extractions Work

The Automated system uses a guided hand piece to make tiny (less than one millimeter), circular “punch” excisions around clusters of up to four hairs from the back of the head. This area is used as a donor site because the hairs found in the back of the head are genetically programmed to not fall out, and they retain this quality when they are transplanted. After the punches are made, controlled pneumatic pressure (suction) is used to remove individual hair follicles from the scalp. By reducing the actual handling of the follicles during harvesting, the success rate for the transplanted hairs is increased. After the follicles are removed with the system, they are gently placed in small slits in bald or balding areas to recreate a full and natural hairline.

The Basics Of FUE

Follicular unit extraction or FUE is an alternative procedure for performing follicular unit hair transplantation. However, unlike the predominant follicular unit transplant procedure, in which a strip of donor tissue is removed and dissected under magnification, the FUE procedure uses a small punch to extract each follicular unit one by one. This exclusive procedure is performed daily at WMHC.

Both the strip excision and FUE procedures create 1, 2, 3, and 4 hair follicular unit grafts that are then transplanted into the balding area in the same manner. The primary difference between these two procedures is the technique used to harvest the follicular unit grafts.

With Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) the donor area must be extensively shaved in order to harvest an optimal number of grafts. Once anesthesia is complete, individual follicle units are superficially excised and extracted using tiny extraction punches and fine tip forceps. No sutures are required with this technique. The tiny puncture sites heal on their own leaving barely perceptible tiny scars scattered throughout the donor zone.
